Comparison Study about Alcohol-Related Problems of the Homeless Developed before and after Economic Crisis in Seoul

Abstract
Objectives£ºThis study was designed to elucidate the differences between the characteristics and alcohol-related problems of the homeless before and after Economic Crisis, and to explore the association between the duration of homelessness and alcohol problems.
Methods£ºThe subjects were 744 adult male homeless inhabited in two shelters in Seoul. Questions of alcohol history, AUDIT(Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test) and ADS(Alcohol Dependence Scale) were applied to them.
Results£ºThe demographic characteristics of the homeless before and after Economic Crisis were different. The rates of high risk group for alcohol use disorder and the clinically significant alcohol users were higher in the homeless before Economic Crisis. The homeless before Economic Crisis started drinking earlier in age than the homeless after Economic Crisis. The drinking amount and frequency were higher in the homeless before Economic Crisis than the homeless after Economic Crisis. There was no significant association between the duration of homelessness and alcohol-related problems.
Conclusion£ºThe demographic characteristics and alcohol-related problems of the homeless were different according to social situation. So, The different characteristics of the homeless should be considered for the psychiatric treatment of the homeless and the effective homeless policy.
